What we know about the victims<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
In an update, the RCMP said that \u201csix additional individuals, not including the suspect, have been located deceased inside the school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cTwo victims have been airlifted to hospital with serious or life\u2011threatening injuries. A third victim died while being transported to hospital,\u201d an RCMP statement said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cApproximately 25 others are being assessed and triaged at the local medical centre for non\u2011life\u2011threatening injuries.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The statement added that another two victims were found in a nearby home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cAs part of the ongoing investigation, police have identified a secondary location believed to be connected to the incident, where two additional victims were located deceased in a residence.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The RCMP said police were still searching for more potential victims: \u201cOfficers are conducting further searches of additional homes and properties to determine whether anyone else may be injured or otherwise linked to today\u2019s events.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The names and ages of the victims were not immediately known.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
What is known about the suspected attacker<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
Canadian authorities said they knew the identity of the suspect \u2013 but are yet to release further details.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The suspect was found dead inside the school with a self-inflicted injury following the shootings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
At a news conference, RCMP North District Commander Chief Supt Ken Floyd confirmed the suspect was the same person police described in an earlier alert sent to local residents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
That alert described a \u201cfemale in a dress with brown hair\u201d \u2013 but the person\u2019s name or gender are yet to be publicly released.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The police also said they were investigating the attacker\u2019s possible motives and whether the suspect had any connection to the school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Darian Quist, a Grade 12 student at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School, and his mother Shelley Quist, spoke to CBC Radio West host Sarah Penton about what happened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Darian said shortly after he got to his class at 13:30 local time, an alarm sounded in the hallways with instructions to close the doors because of a lockdown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He said the doors were closed for a while, when he and his classmates realised something was wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He said he was receiving photos on his phone from the scene.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cWe got tables and barricaded the doors\u201d for over two hours, Darian said, until police arrived to escort them out of the school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Once outside, he reunited with his mother at a nearby community centre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Shelley Quist said that on her phone she had earlier heard police \u201ckicking\u201d her son\u2019s classroom door down and several students being escorted out of the school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThat\u2019s when I left home. We live very close; a block away from the community centre. I literally almost ran over there,\u201d she told CBC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Tumbler Ridge Mayor Darryl Krakowka told CBC that the community is small and tight-knit, and that he expected the victims to all be people he knows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cI will know every victim. I\u2019ve been here 19 years, and we\u2019re a small community,\u201d he said, after emerging from the town hall when the shelter-in-place order was lifted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cI don\u2019t call them residents. I call them family.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Tumbler Ridge town councillor Chris Norbury told BBC Radio 4\u2019s Today programme the whole community was in shock after the shootings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cWe don\u2019t lock our doors here. It is an incredibly safe community\u2026 we don\u2019t have to worry about crime here,\u201d he said, speaking live from the scene.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThis is a big tragedy here,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The councillor described going to the secondary school and seeing emergency services blocking the entrance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cWe have three police vehicles in our town, we are very small. We are a small community. We know each other, we all know the victims. They are our friends, our friends\u2019 children.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n British Columbia Premier David Eby described the shootings as \u201ca devastating and unimaginable tragedy\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cWe can\u2019t imagine what the community is going through. But I know it\u2019s causing us to all hug our kids a little bit tighter tonight,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has decided to suspend a planned trip to Germany, and in emotional remarks, and lamented the \u201cdifficult day\u201d \u2013 the first of many in the aftermath of the attack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThe nation mourns with you. Canada stands by you,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cWe will get through this. But right now it is a time to come together, like Canadians do in these terrible situations.
