A law enforcement officer was shot in the bullet-resistant vest but is expected to be OK, one officer told The Associated Press.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trump and hundreds of guests were gathered. The event was abruptly canceled and is expected to be rescheduled.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.icmarkets.com\/global\/en\/trade-gold\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ecret Service agents and other law enforcement officers quickly flooded the area as guests took cover under tables. (Credit: @realDonaldTrump)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What we know about the suspected gunman<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>What we know:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The shooting suspect was identified as Cole Tomas Allen, 31, of Torrance, California, two law enforcement officials told The Associated Press.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>President Donald Trump shared an image of the suspected gunman\u00a0on Truth Social.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Interim D.C. Police Chief Carroll said the shooting suspect is believed to have been a hotel guest, though the intended target remains unknown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Carroll said the suspect was armed with a shotgun, handgun and multiple knives. He said investigators had no reason to believe at this time that anyone else was involved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Carroll, the police chief, said there &#8220;does not appear to be any sort of danger to the public&#8221; now and that investigators believe the suspect was working alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"932\" height=\"524\" src=\"https:\/\/dausnews.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/image-17.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1541\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dausnews.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/image-17.png 932w, https:\/\/dausnews.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/image-17-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/dausnews.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/image-17-768x432.png 768w, https:\/\/dausnews.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/image-17-18x10.png 18w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 932px) 100vw, 932px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>What we don&#8217;t know:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Carroll, the interim police chief, said that he could not say at this point what the shooter\u2019s motivation was, and that it is too soon to know who the suspect had intended to target in the shooting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What they&#8217;re saying:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trump said the suspect was armed with multiple weapons before being stopped by the Secret Service. One officer was shot, but he was protected by a bulletproof vest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;He was shot from very close distance with a very powerful gun, and the vest did the job,&#8221; Trump said in a late night news conference at the White House.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;My impression is he was a lone wolf, whack job. These are crazy people.
